What does “Named in X of Y checks” mean?
It's how many of your recent weekly checks named you for a question, for example ChatGPT Search 3/6 means 3 of the last 6 checks. AI answers vary from run to run, so a count over several checks tells you more than any single check.
Each check asks every question once on each engine. One answer is one sample, and the next one can differ. So once you have a few weekly checks, the Prompts page shows, for each question, how often each engine named you in the last 6 checks of that market: "Recent checks: ChatGPT Search 3/6 · Google AI Overviews 0/4 · Gemini 4/6". The dashboard's Prompts card shows the same as "N of M checks".
Why the numbers can differ by engine
The second number counts only checks where that engine actually answered. Google AI Overviews doesn't appear for every search, and a failed answer is left out, so one engine can show 0/4 while another shows 4/6. Neither failed nor missing answers count against you.
The labels you'll see
- Named once, confirming next check: the first time you were named for this question. It counts as a gain once the next check names you too.
- Varies: you weren't named this time, after a mention last time. That's normal variation, not a loss yet.
- A change counts as a gain or a loss only after it holds for 2 checks in a row, in both directions.
What to look at
The trend. A question that goes from 1 of 6 to 4 of 6 over a couple of months is moving. One week up or down is not news. Why answers move at all is explained in Why do my results change?, and the full rule is on the methodology page.
